I feel the need..
Firstly, I hope you got the Top Gun reference. And secondly, wow! Not only did I get to shoot my favourite car today, I also got to drive it. Ladies and Gentlemen, the Aston Martin Vanquish. And I repeat. Wow. Today I had track-day near Fife, a birthday present from a few friends. And it did not disappoint. I won’t drone on about how great the day was (it was fantastic) or how stunning the cars were (beautiful). The other important thing from today was that I also got the opportunity to practice something I’d yet to do with my new camera, and that’s attempt to capture some motion in my photographs. I’d done my homework beforehand, so I roughly new the settings I’d need to capture the shot – but I hadn’t anticipated quite how difficult it would be to maintain a smooth panning motion to ensure the subject stayed relatively sharp, whilst blurring the background to depict the motion. I think it was only after a good 15-20 mins that I’d finally got something close to a smooth action which allowed me to come up with this shot.
I also had the opportunity to shoot several other cars as other drivers completed their laps – including the Ferrari F430 (which I also got to drive), Audi R8, Lotus Elise and the Ariel Atom. While the Ferrari and the Audi did also produce some good shots, my favourite image was the Vanquish. Not only did I manage to keep the sharpness of the car, but I also managed to show the excellent lighting, as the reflection of the sky in the cars highlights is really clear. Due my position on the track, I was also able take the shot just before the cars were breaking into the corner, so in this shot I was also able to capture the break lights which add that little bit extra colour. I’m really pleased with my shot today, it worked out even better than I expected (or hoped) especially as this was my first time to take this kind of shot. So much so, I’ve not even tried to touch the image up in Photoshop today. Sure it could be framed better, and I probably could have got a more varied background – but for a first attempt I’m pretty pleased. Unfortunately, not every day can be like today. So tomorrow it may be back to the more familiar. But who knows maybe I’ll get another flash of inspiration.
Thanks for reading everyone! As always, much appreciated.
