The last time I stood outside these doors, it was warm and sunny, I was wearing a kilt for only the second time in my life, and I’d been married for about twenty minutes. Yes, this is the church that my wife and I were married in – 545 days ago. I was at a loose end today as my wife was out for the afternoon and I had two options. 1. stay at home, watch the Olympic Ice Hockey final, and come up with a still life shot, or 2. get a lift with the wife and visit the next town over with my camera. I chose the later (after sky+’ing the Ice Hockey!) although after fifteen minutes, I regretted the decision for a while as the heavens opened and I got a teeny bit soaked! Fortunately it wasn’t on for long, so after hiding under a bridge I was able to get back out and get some shots.
There aren’t too many obvious shots to take in and around Haddington, so I decided to stick with what I know, and that was St Mary’s Church and the Nungate Bridge next to it. I did manage to get a few nice shots, but this shot has a personal meaning to me, so it was an easy choice for todays selection. I won’t have time tonight to post up all the shots from the weekend, but I’ll try to find time to share them tomorrow instead!
St Mary’s Church is fantastic, its architecture is sublime – and all I got was time to shoot the outside today – next time I’d definitely like to get back inside the church! But for this shot I wanted to capture the detail in the brickwork around the doorway and windows whilst also bringing out the colour of the building as it shifts from a deep red to a pale pink at the top. I don’t remember that lamppost being there the last time I was here – I wasn’t in any of our wedding photos that’s for certain! It was a bit too big to use wireworm in Photoshop to remove it, so it’s staying (for now). Really happy with way this turned out, perhaps for more sentimental reasons that for technical reasons – as it’s probably slightly underexposed. Unfortunately there was a completely uninteresting sky as well otherwise it would have really made the shot I think. As with the last few shots, not much required in Photoshop, just a touch up here and there, but like I said, I’m pretty happy with the shot anyway. That’s all for now folks as I have to shoot. Hopefully more time tomorrow. Hope you’ve all enjoyed your weekend – thanks for reading!
